2 years ago today I got Scoliosis surgery

It’s been two years since surgery. That’s very hard for me to understand. It seems like just yesterday I got the surgery and yet forever ago. The first year and a half was lost in a time warp. I know young people heal quickly from Scoliosis surgery but for older folks like me, it took a long time, especially since my back was broken and damaged even before the surgery. The past couple months have been very very good and I’m glad I got the surgery! Life is good and getting better all the time. =)

I don’t have any photos to share today but I will share here…
A Prayer of Thanksgiving.

Thank you, God, for this time in my life. It hasn’t been easy recovering the past couple years but you have been with me through it all. I remember the night a couple months after surgery and the pain was so great that I couldn’t sleep. I asked you if I could fall asleep in your palm and I fell asleep instantly. Many nights after that I would pray “Can I please fall asleep in your palm tonight?” and not ten seconds passed when I was asleep, even despite the piercing pain. You are amazing, God. Thank you for the comfort.

Thanks, God for helping me not panic. The times I lay there looking at the ceiling and couldn’t move without assistance, the times when I couldn’t move my arms, the times when I thought I would break all over again. But I didn’t and you calmed me down and let me know that it was ok to just rest. It was ok to not move. It was ok for weeks to go by and seasons to pass. Thank you for the calm that covered my spirit.

Thank you, God for letting my husband and sons be so amazing. You knew I didn’t have parents or sisters nearby. You knew it was just me and the boys. Thank you for all that encouragement and loving patience from my sons. They were amazing! Thank you for the two years of cooking they did. Thank you for their diligence in picking things up from the floor and getting things out of cupboards for me and moving stuff when I needed it. God, they gave up so much to take care of me. Thank you for their huge hearts, their abundant energy and their unstoppable encouragement. Thank you for their laughter. Bless them over and above what they gave away.

Thank you, God, for always thinking kind thoughts toward us. We mess things up so much. Thank you for giving us order when there is chaos and direction when we’re lost. Thank you for helping us when we make stupid mistakes. God, I made a really stupid mistake when I didn’t seek medical attention when my back broke. We humans truly are bleating sheep sometimes. Thank you for guiding us and steering us in the right direction.

God, I love living on this earth. Even with disability, I LOVE being here. There are beautiful people here. The heartbeat in this world is beautiful and worth sustaining. Please forgive us when we have a “broken back” and don’t seek the right solution, when we try to fix things on our own. Please help us go through the hard times to get to the better times, the times that you planned for us. Thank you for being incredibly patient with us all.

And God, thank you so much for letting me be able to walk.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

This photo was taken yesterday at Sunset Beach, NC. I still remember the sound of the waves and the warm moist breeze on my skin. Shh… breathe…

God is good.

On my worktable – Dress Cookies

Today I have cookies on my worktable. This is the second time I’ve topped a cookie with flow icing. It’s not too hard if you get the Royal Icing consistency right. Fortunately, we were glad some cookies didn’t turn out so we could eat them. This is the first time painting on a cookie. Easier than I thought and quite fun.
In the little dish – kirsch mixed with edible gold dust. In the shot glass – more kirsch that needed stirring into the mixture as it evaporated.

The designs were inspired by Rosanna’s beautiful white and gold Luxe Moderne mugs.

Sometimes it seems like we’ll never get there.
Toy boat 1
We walk and walk and walk.
Toy boat 2
We even do some climbing.
Toy boat 3
And then there is even more to do.
Toy boat 4
Toy boat 5
Toy boat 6
But maybe it wasn’t about going to sea at all.
Toy boat 7
Perhaps it was all about the journey…
…and feeling the sand on your toes…
Toy boat 8
and the wind in your hair…
Toy boat 9

Enjoy the journey.

The tiny crystal beads on the egg tree catch light in the new window.

I’ve decided to keep the egg tree with little hanging plants in the window a bit longer. This is the first spring with the new window and I enjoy the sunshine streaming through the crystal beads on the tiny plants.

Free Idea – Books & Eats Restaurant

Oh I wish there was such a thing!!!!!!!!!
Restaurants are great for socializing. Food and friends go together perfectly.
But sometimes, you just want to eat something amazing and READ something great at the same time.
Thus, the perfect restaurant would be eat & read, or Books & Eats.
Picture this…

Bohemian decor with super comfy chairs and customizable lighting at every table.
Great, knowledgeable staff, all lovers of books and food.
Shelves of books on every wall.
Once seated… snippets of possible conversation…

White shirt bowtie waiter: “Good evening! Would you like fiction or non-fiction this fine evening?”

“Non-fiction,” you say, a bit tired, brushing at the paint stains on your jeans. “Perhaps something inspiring. Can you recommend a good book?”

“Family or Business?”

“Business,” you respond. “Well, perhaps both. I’ve reached an impasse with a new venture and need inspiration.”

“Why certainly!” says the waiter. “We have a very fine non-fiction, vintage 2002, by Steven Pressfield. The War of Art, Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles.”

“That sounds perfect!” The book title sounds intriguing and you’re already encouraged. It just feels good to have someone want to help, even if their help is hit or miss. “What do you recommend to go with it? I’m in the mood for a good dessert.”

“If you want to go citrus, I highly recommend a slice of Lemon Orange Cheesecake with Vanilla Bean Kumquat topping. The mixture of sweet and tang is inspiring and the touch of bittersweet is the perfect finish. It’s the kind of dessert that you enjoy leisurely, savoring each bite and letting the flavor sink in.”

“And how long do I have?” you ask.

“For this particular all-together-yum, we allow 30 minutes. But you are welcome to purchase the book when you leave.”

“Great!” you say, as you lean back in the padded chair and check your watch. The food and book show up within two minutes so you get a full 28 minutes to enjoy the exquisite dessert and inspiring read.

Yeah, I’m there. Today.

100 Lego Perfume Bottles

if Lego made perfume…

Actually, there are over 100.
The Legos were dumped out on the table and the grandkids and I chatted away during many cold winter nights.
While the little ones made houses and trucks and planes, I started making perfume bottles.

Lego Perfume Bottles made of the smallest Lego pieces.

Lego Perfume Bottles made of the smallest Lego pieces.

I made more and more.
2 Lego Perfume Bottles
It became an obsession.
3 Lego Perfume Bottles collection
The rules were simple: No pieces could be forced, all the bottles had to be built like normal Lego building and they all had to stick together properly. There is just one bottle out of all of them that isn’t stuck together and the pieces fall apart if you turn it upside down. Can you guess which one?
4 Lego Perfume Bottles collection
So much color and sparkle from such a tiny source!
5 Lego Perfume Bottles collection
Perfume Nation.
6 Lego Perfume Bottles collection
At one point, we counted 124 different Lego perfume bottles.
Then some got disassembled to make different designs.
7 Lego Perfume Bottles collection
And then we started naming them.
8 Lego Perfume Bottles
So I made a poster of 100 of the Lego perfume bottles to be named.
This is a very large image. Click to access the original size in order to see all the detail.

Some of these Lego perfumes don’t have names. Please leave name suggestions in the comments and I’ll add them to the Lego Perfume Bottles poster.

Feel free to copy, save or print the poster. If you post on your website, please link back to allsparkledup.com. Thank you!

Edited to add: I was asked what lighting I used for the photography. The photos were taken in the late afternoon, west sun through half-curtain window. The top of the arch window had plenty of sun streaming through which bounced off my white kitchen cabinets behind me like a giant white board, exactly as I hoped when we redid the kitchen. Camera- Canon 5D2, Lens Canon EF 24-70, hand-held.
