Repurposed Men’s Tie Wool Interlining Rose Wreath

That’s quite the wordy title for it! But that’s exactly what the flowers and hanging ribbons are made of – the rough wool interlinings of men’s ties. The hanging pieces are just as they were when I pulled them out of the re-purposed ties, complete with pointy ends, some crumpled and narrower.

The flowers are made using the wool interlinings of men's ties.

It needs a couple more roses, “sushi buds” and pearl branches though which I hope to get made next week. I might forget to take another photo of the wreath so that’s why I’m posting this now. The pearl sprays were from Gilded Life monthly Stash Society boxes. If I have time, I’m going to make more of the pearl branches. They really make a big difference in the wreath.

I have officially changed the name of the ruffle buds to Sushi Buds because my guys say they look like sushi. Sweet. I’m hoping to have time to make a tutorial of the sushi buds. They are fun to make but do take some dexterity.

This big wreath is displayed on the living room wall every Christmas but it always had large, red velvet poinsettias. I love the new look of the soft creamy wool. I’ve wanted ivory flowers on this wreath for a long time but never had the budget for new flowers when I pulled it out of the attic each December. How peachy to come up with the perfect color flowers for free!

Well, there was a cost – I ransacked the guys’ stash of ties. Ha! They were very generous to give up so many they were no longer using. One tie makes one rose or two sushi buds. So that’s a lot of ties. These could be made using wool fabric but it’s important to cut a tie shape on diagonal grain. The tapered tie shape allows for larger petals as the rose is formed and the diagonal cut creates the perfect fuzzy fringe edge. So the wool interlinings from men’s ties worked perfect!

On my worktable – Christmas decorations in progress

Many tasks, all quite mixed up. On my worktable, the big red bow for the front porch, the garland lights for the back deck and the fabric roses and ruffle buds I’m making for a wreath.

On my worktable - roses, rosettes and ruffle buds made from men's tie wool interlinings.

The roses, rosettes and ruffle buds are made from the wool interlinings of men’s ties. I’m saving the silk tie fabric for other projects and kept the interlinings just because I can’t bear to throw out fabric. I’m glad I saved the pieces because they make beautiful roses! I tried unsuccessfully to make a rose bud so had to come up with another design. I really like how the ruffly buds are turning out, with luscious little layered centers. The next time I make icing flowers for a cake, I’m going to try to duplicate the design in icing.

Each full rose is made from the uncut interlining from one tie. The buds are made from a narrow interlining. One of the tie interlinings didn’t need cut to make one bud but the other longer interlinings did need cut to about 24″ in length. I can get two buds from one narrow long interlining cut in half.

Cascade Heart Wreath – In the Garden

I’m quite happy to finally finish my Cascade Heart Wreath, Garden theme. This is the first of four Cascade Heart Wreaths I’m making, all completely different in color and style. But they all start with a Styrofoam frame forming the top of the heart and a cascade of hanging trim forming the lower part of the heart. I have been wanting a heart shaped wreath for some time now but wanted a more organic, flowing design. Making a heart with a cascade bottom was the perfect solution. An unexpected bonus: when the cascade is made of lighter material, it flutters with air movement. Having that movement is soothing to me, like a gentle spring breeze catching leaves.

This wreath reminds me of the kind of garden you would discover at the edge of property, not always tended, sometimes forgotten, a little bit wild but still beautiful. Pockets of little stones are scattered around the mossy knoll and the picket fence is a perfect resting spot for a baby bird. I adore swings and decided this garden needed a secret swing, hidden in the ivy.

Cascade Heart Wreath - Garden theme, with ivy vines hanging down

Cascade Heart Wreath - The flowers at the end of some vines help define the heart shape

Cascade Heart Wreath - A baby bird perches on the picket fence.

Cascade Heart Wreath - The wreath is embellished with moss, stones, ferns, flowers and tiny clear, glass beads, like dew.

Cascade Heart Wreath - A tiny butterfly perches on the rope of a secret swing hanging amidst the vines.

Well hello there, jolly bonsai! This one is not serene and I love the exuberance in the form. Shake! Dance! Fling! Those words befit this bad-hair bonsai and it makes me smile. Last spring, I did a lot of pinching but this year I'm giving it a break to see what it does. There was a lot of wiring on this one. . . . #bonsai #gardening #plantsinpots #miniaturetree #juniperbonsai #juniper #outdoorgardening #allsparkledupdesign #allsparkledup

It was lunch for one - an incredible melt-in-your-mouth pork sandwich accompanied with a kale, red cabbage and flax seed salad. My daughter-in-law made the most amazing pork, slow cooked with spicy hot jalapenos, and gave me a bowlful. I had just two pieces of thick, homemade bread French Toast left and they were perfect for the sandwich. Oh how delicious! - I sat there and was so thankful and asked Jesus to sit with me at my dining room "restaurant" and enjoy the amazing flavor with me. He did. We're never alone. Never alone. He's waiting for your invite. ;) - #tastingambition #gratitude #homecook #lunchforone #slowcooked #humblecooking #plated #notwastedonme #allsparkledupdesign #allsparkledup
The Caramel Thyme Latte made with CC Finca el Puente was aMAZing! So different, smooth and fresh, with just a hint of thyme. "What is that flavor? I've never tasted anything like this." I'm still not good at pouring hearts but this was delicious. - If you have an idea, just GO with it. Don't think "it's never been done" or "it's already been done"... It doesn't matter. I dumped a couple tablespoons of @CounterCulture Finca el Puenta in the hopper and put a sprig of fresh thyme in the basket. We were out of our two favorite beans for espresso, @CounterCulture Forty Six and @Southernseason blend Black Velvet. So I dumped a couple tablespoons of @CounterCulture Finca el Puenta in the hopper and put a sprig of fresh thyme in the basket. The espresso was too tart for my liking by itself, partly from the thyme oils, but the Caramel Thyme Latte was aMAZing! So different, smooth and fresh, with just a hint of thyme. Two tiny nuthatches are building a nest in the hanging planter. The New Dawn rose vine, reaching up from 25 feet down on the ground, was so long that I wrapped it around the hanging planter last year. We've never had birds in the planter before and I'm so happy they are here! They will be safe from the owls, snakes and hawks that fill the woods. . My eyes teared up with tenderness toward these tiny birds. So much care they are taking for their little babies. . His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me. On my worktable, a lavendar latte and a test print of Paper Flower Chevron from @Spoonflower. The photos used are all of flowers and ivy grown on our property. Alas, I'm not a good gardener so there are more flowers on this fabric than I've ever seen in our yard! haha Now to finish the rest of the Paper Flower fabric collection. Design time. :) The link to Paper Flower Chevron fabric is in my profile. This canvas fat quarter will make a great pillow for on our deck. :) Or maybe I'll get more and make placemats... or napkins... The second juniper bonsai I made looks more traditional, with a lovely sweeping curve, thanks to the original bent form. ha! Is that cheating? A couple years ago I saw an amazing juniper growing in a store parking lot landscape. It had been run over by a vehicle but survived and wow.. it was an amazing bonsai! I almost considered asking the store to dig it up and sell it to me. I'm still undecided about removing one of these branches. . . . #bonsai #gardening #plantsinpots #miniaturetree #juniperbonsai #juniper #outdoorgardening #allsparkledupdesign #allsparkledup
This is the first bonsai I made. It was started in a class several years ago and my little bonsai looked completely different from all the other class members' junipers. Mine got raised eyebrows and a couple laughs and jokes. I was happy with it and embarrassed and humiliated at the same time. So I took my little bonsai home and chopped it all up and rewired it, trying to make it something I thought the other class members would approve. This little tree has sadness in it. I have accepted this little tree the way it is now and it has all my love, even if a bonsai master would disapprove. I tend it with care and love and it seems happy to me. We shared tears together. God said "tend the garden" so I am. Never give up, even if you're laughed at. Be original and know that the world needs your originality. I have been laughed at many times in my life but after a couple days and sometimes tears, I grow back stronger than ever. . . . #ignorethescoffers #youcandoit #bonsai #gardening #plantsinpots #miniaturetree #juniperbonsai #juniper #outdoorgardening #allsparkledupdesign #allsparkledup
Spring here is usually a tiny sliver between cold winter and sweltering summer. This year, I'm more mobile than ever and can't wait to plant something now that spring is here. Yay! I'm not very good at gardening and so many things outside die. But the little things in pots are all thriving. Such as this bonsai collection. The one on the left is one I made in a bonsai class. The other two were made from salvaged junipers from Lowes and Home Depot. I picked the gnarliest ones so they didn't need too much wiring. . . . #bonsai #gardening #plantsinpots #miniaturetree #juniperbonsai #juniper #outdoorgardening #allsparkledupdesign #allsparkledup
Remembering that day when our balloon was higher than theirs. What a fun ride! Can bucket list items be repeated? I say yes. . . . #hotairballoon #hotairballoonfestival #birdseyeview #allsparkledupdesign #allsparkledup
3. By the time I cleaned the machine, the caramel had sunk. It was a delicious latte! . . . #gottahavelattes #dailylatte #ilovecoffee #coffee #breville #homebarista #allsparkledupdesign #allsparkledup
