Here are more photos from my granddaughter’s 4th birthday party. This is a long post with many photos. Please click on a photo to see a larger version if you wish. I made Ballerina Cake Pops for her in her favorite colors, purple and pink.

I drew little ballerinas on white plastic cut from clean buttermilk jugs. Then I carefully cut them out using embroidery scissors. The cake balls were made and chilled and then I inserted the ballerina into the cake ball. You can see the feet of the ballerinas sticking out of the bottom of several of the cake balls. It would have been easier to just make picks but I wanted my Granddaughter to have a little plastic ballerina to play with when she was done eating the cake pop, so of course they had to have legs.

Since there was a ballerina in the cake pop, I could not dip it as usual. I spread the melted white chocolate around the ball with an offset spatula. These were placed in styrofoam and then placed in the refrigerator to chill.

The prepared cake pops were allowed to come to room temperature before piping rows of sugar ruffles using a small rose tip.

All the cake pops were placed on a stage made of styrofoam around which I pinned crepe paper streamers and gilded trim.
I made a banner of ballerinas but forgot to take a photo of them hanging at the party. Here are photos of the construction.

The ballerinas were drawn in Photoshop, based on a similar project in Marie Claire Idees magazine. I had to modify the Marie Claire version since it was flat, not with a full honeycomb skirt. Here you can see the honeycomb bridal shower garland from which I cut the skirts.

The ballerinas are prepared for hanging. A single thin wire will be attached through a pinhole at the top of each ballerina and strung with crystal beads.

The ballerinas are hung temporarily in my dining room as I work on the hanging wires on each one They looked lovely at the party and I’m sorry I forgot to get a photo.
Oh, wow, What wonderful ideas. It all looks fantastic. tfs.

Thank you for the kind comment, Florence!
These are gorgeous! Would they be difficult to make for a beginner?
Ricka, thank you for the compliment! The cake pops with ruffled skirts are not for beginners. I have decorated lots of cakes so cutting the little ballerinas out of plastic and making the ruffles was tedious but not difficult. Instead of piping icing ruffles, perhaps you could make a cake pop with a little ballerina topper and use just colored sugar and sprinkles for the skirts without ruffles.
Wow….what phenomenal cake pops! They look adorable! If you don’t mind me asking what are the ruffles made out of? Your granddaughter is pretty darn lucky to have a grandma like you! Melinda Harvey from One Bite or Two

What a wounderful ideia! thank you for sharing!
Those are adorable! You are very creative! What recipe did you use for the sugar ruffles?
Absolutely gorgeous….I’m trying to make these for my granddaughter. Please would you be willing to share what the sugar ruffles are made of?
Thanks so much!!
Thank you so much for all your compliments! We call them “sugar ruffles” but they are simply homemade buttercream icing piped on with a small rose tip. The coated cake balls need to be at room temperature before piping the icing ruffles on. Otherwise, condensation may form on the outside of the cake ball and prevent the icing from sticking on the underside of the cake ball. After I finished piping the ruffles and adding sprinkles and sparkling sugars, I stored the completed ballerinas in the refrigerator in a piece of styrofoam. They kept well for several days. There were no problems with condensation when I took them out of the refrigerator to serve on party day. Please let me know if you have any other questions. =)
Hi there, I was searching for “ballerina cake pops” for my daughter’s birthday and found your site. These are absolutely stunning, and your granddaughter is a lovely and lucky young girl to have such a loving and creative grandmother. My mom and grandmother also loved crafts and baking, and I miss them both so much. Thanks for the inspiration!

I love the whole ballerina theme for your granddaughter’s party – she is a lucky girl to have such a creative grandmother. I particularly like the ballerina banner idea – can you explain more about how you did the ruffled ballet skirts? I think you may have used something not available in the UK, but I would like to try to track it down if I can. Great blog!
Thank you so much! =) To make the ballerina banner, I cut up a “Dress and Cake Honeycomb Garland”. You can see how I cut it in this photo on my blog. There are a number of sources online for the Dress and Cake Honeycomb Garland and this one is a really good price. http://www.partycity.com/product/honeydew+honeycomb+wedding+garland+12ft.do I think a garland of small wedding bells would work just as well for cutting up.
Oh my goodness I just saw these pictures, great job on our grand-daughters ballerina cake pops and banner. The best gram ever, hate missing my baby girls birthday. She is the most beautiful little girl ever.<3
How absolutely stunning! I too adore my granddaughter and love to do things for all my grandbabies!! Just one question. Where did you find the figure of the ballerina for the cake balls and the garland. They are exquisite!! I am a true amateur, but I’m going to give it a go!!! BEAUTIFUL!!
